Putting on a few kilos, erratic blood sugar levels, and other health problems are common after Diwali. Indulging in sweets and Mithai is something we all do. Festivities and holidays can disrupt our daily routines, food choices, and workouts.

However, eating healthy and staying fit does not mean you give up on the fun.

You can do both, enjoy the festivities, and stay healthy this Diwali. Here are a few tips to help you stay healthy this Diwali 2021.

1. Drink Water

Every time we talk about health, Drinking water always tops the list. But still, drinking water is always at the bottom of our list. With all the mayhem and chaos of the festivities, we tend to forget to drink water.

You should drink water if staying healthy this Diwali is your goal.
Now, why is it important to drink water?

Drinking water will help you:

  •  Flush out toxins that our body produces due to stress as well as unhealthy eating habits.
  • Prevent you from overeating (and that is the last thing we want to do with so many sweets around the house).
  • It is the best remedy against hangovers, constipation, and indigestion.

Try to drink up to 3 liters of water per day. Sounds too much? Try this simple trick.

Set aside three one-liter bottles and write your name using a sticker or a label. This way, you can keep track of the water you had on that particular day.

Remember, always drink water slowly and in small quantities instead of dousing down a whole bottle. Drinking water slowly gives the body time to absorb it, or else you will be making frequent trips to the washroom.

2. Make Diwali Sweets at Home

Diwali, like any other Indian festival, is incomplete without sweets. We all have favorite sweets/ Mithai that we look forwardhome made ladoos to eating during Diwali.

The problem is that most of these Mithai’s or sweets are store-bought and laden with sugar, fat, refined flour, and color. Food adulteration is at its peak during Diwali and other festivals.

Furthermore, the ingredients used are of substandard quality. With the covid pandemic this Diwali 2020, we want to preserve our health at all costs.

This year instead of buying Diwali sweets, make them at home using healthier substitutes and quality ingredients.

Making sweets at home gives you better control over the amount of sugar and fat used. This way, you can enjoy your sweets without much guilt.

3. Swap Unhealthy with Healthy.

But remember, the prime function of food is to nourish your body and not just about taste and celebration.

Get creative with your ingredients. A little substitution is all you need. For example, swap the unhealthy maida in your recipe with wholesome flours like ragi or whole wheat. Replace sugar with jaggery or honey.

Replace the unhealthy snacks high in fat, sugar, and salt with healthier options.

A wide variety of roasted snacks are available in the market, like roasted chickpeas, roasted makhana, granola bars, trail mixes, khakra, nuts, dried fruits, etc.

While buying healthy snacks, keep the following criteria of healthy snacks in mind –

  • Total calories between -100-150 kcals per serving
  • 5-8 gm of protein per serving
  • 3- 5 gm of fiber per serving
  • Low in sodium – less than 150mg of sodium per serving
  • No added sugar

Start your day with a good breakfast. A high protein and fiber breakfast sets you on a course of clean eating for the day. Make it a rule to eat healthy snacks every 2-3 hours.

Eat something light before you go for a feast or sit down to a lavish dinner. With mouth-watering delicacies laid out and constant persuasion from friends and family is the test even for the strongest of wills.

6. Add Salad At Every Meal

When stressed, remove yourself from chaos and spend some time alone. Try breathing exercises too.

Most important of all, sleep well. Keep a fixed sleep time and aim to get 6-8hours of sound sleep. You can sip on herbal teas like chamomile tea or lavender tea to relax your nerves and sleep better.

After the festivities come to an end, and as our lives are back to the routine, we begin to feel guilty and regret giving in to our cravings. While most of us try to get things on track, some are disappointed with themselves and give up trying.

Do not reminiscence about the time lost. Let the bygones be bygones. Remember, your future will be determined by what you do today and not what you did in the past.

Shake off the negative feelings and get started. Start with small changes, and slowly steer yourself back on the road.
